Authors should not work for free

I agree with Philip Hensher that authors should not work for free.  They are professionals just like anyone else and often given the mantra ‘but you’ll get enormous publicity and coverage if you do this for free.”  I was guilty of this tactic too when I was voluntarily running the Bournemouth Literary Festival and that’s because sadly I had no money to give them.  So how do we stop this when many of us in the publishing, writing and creative industries are running on tight shoestrings.
